Introduction to making Greek Vanilla spoon dessert
Question. What is Greek Vanillia Spoon Dessert (Βανίλια γλυκο τού κουταλιού)?
Answer. Greek vanilla spoon dessert is currently called “Vanilla submarine" in Greece; in Greek; "βανιλια υποβρυχιο”. In proper pastry terms it simply is vanilla fondant. In Greece it is one of the traditional desserts and it is often served as a “spoon dessert” to guests.
You scoop a bit of vanilla fondant and submerge it in ice-cold water. You lick the fondant from the spoon, and once finished you can drink the sweetened water. It’s a perfect treat for a hot summer day.
An alternate flavoring for this recipe is to use mastic crystals, which come from the Greek island of Chios.
